New bike rental scheme in Stroud

New bike rental scheme in Stroud

David Drew MP joined the launch of the new bike rental scheme in Stroud which will enable people to hire a bike using their mobile phones.

The scheme, run by Bainton Bikes, sees bikes available to hire from three hubs in Stroud; beside The Clock Tower; High Street near the junction for Kendrick Street; and King Street.

“This is a brilliant idea, and I’m really pleased to see its launch here in Stroud,” said David Drew MP at the launch outside the town’s Subscription Rooms on Monday.

“I wish it well and hope that it enables and encourages more people to cycle in Stroud.”

Bainton Bikes already has bikes for hire in Cheltenham, Tetbury and Cirencester, but the company is expanding and if the move to bring bikes to Stroud goes well, it says it may bring them to Nailsworth and Stonehouse too.

The bikes will be grouped around virtual hubs, with their own self-contained locking system rather than a bike rack,  and are accessible via a smartphone app.

Would-be cyclists will be able to use their phone to find the nearest bike, unlock it, and pedal off.
