David's invitation to Women's State Pension Meeting; letter in full

Dear

Re: Invitation to Attend Women’s State Pension Meeting

I am writing because I believe you may be one of the thousands of women in the Stroud Constituency who were born in the 1950s, and consequently that you have almost certainly been affected by the changes made to your state pension age (SPA) in 1995 and 2011.

The government’s decision to accelerate the change to state pension age has meant that women born in the 1950s did not receive enough notice to plan for their new circumstances. Worse, many women did not receive any information about the changes at all. The pace of change has been confusing; some 1950s women have had to wait an extra two years for their pensions, while others face a wait of six years!

In 2017, a change was made to the requirements for National Insurance contributions (NIC) to qualify for a full pension, which has increased from 30 years to 35 years. Once again, women were not notified of this change.

Many people, including myself, feel that women in their sixties have been unfairly treated and that they ought to receive compensation for the lack of notice and a bridging pension to help cover the gap between their old State Pension Age (60) and their new one. This is the proposal being put forward by WASPI - Women Against State Pension Inequality.

I support the local WASPI campaigners and have joined the WASPI All Party Parliamentary Group. I have challenged the government on this issue in parliament and urged it to put right the historic injustice now facing women who were born in the 1950s. I would like to hear about your personal experiences so I can stand up for your rights and speak out more effectively on your behalf.

I would now like to invite you to a meeting that will give you an opportunity to find out more about your state pension age (SPA), the new National Insurance requirements, and how you can get involved with the campaign should you so wish. The meeting will be held at St Laurence Church, Stroud, GL5 1JL, at 5.30pm on Thursday 3 May.

If I have made an error and you were not born in the 1950s, please accept my apologies and pass this invitation on to anyone you know who may be affected or interested. If not, I do hope that you and your family will be able to join me for this open public meeting so we can tackle this injustice together. You might also like to visit the WASPI website, www.waspi.co.uk, for further information.

Yours sincerely,
