Cuts to services - Councils need urgent change

Cuts to services - Councils need urgent change

Austerity has been a disaster for #LocalGovernment. Thanks to cuts at the Department of Housing, Communities and Local Government, Council spending power is down 22% between 2010 and 2018.

They forced it even lower in places like #Stroud. As we have seen in the case of Northamptonshire the cuts are so deep that even with preferential funding deals from their own party in government Tory-run county councils can barely survive. Look at Gloucestershire’s roads?

In most healthy democracies local government is treasured as a strong, healthy and independent means for local communities to make meaningful decisions about the sort of lives they want to live. That’s what we need here.

What’s the fastest way to end the housing crisis? As I argued recently in the Huffington Post UK, we must give our councils the freedom to build a new generation of council housing.

And we need councils to re-invest in our children’s services, whilst restoring the power of councils to ensure every child has a place at an excellent local school in addition to re-enabling far greater levels of co-operation between all schools.
