Video - Farming policy must focus on food production as well as environment
What we eat and how our food is produced is vital, as I told BBC Politics on Sunday. But the Government's new Agriculture Bill barely mentions the most fundamental aspect of farming: food production and security.
We could end up simply swapping European policy for US or Australasian control. Our farmers won't be competing on a level playing field with the USA which massively subsidises its agriculture. The effect would be catastrophic for British agriculture, and our landscape and welfare standards.
The Government's pledges to protect the environment are meaningless if we don't also support farmers for producing food.
I will be spending this autumn talking to experts on the best way to do this, and #BackBritishFarming.
